Quick gifts

You should never forget that the closer the holidays get, the more things to do and time can be limited. But if you need quick gifts for friends or family, your sewing skills can come in handy to save the day. The two items detailed in today’s ASG blog post are perfect for almost anyone on your gift list…and you can whip them up in no time, probably from whatever you have in your stash or by taking a quick trip to the fabric store.

Trio of bracelets

Quick gifts - bracelets

Make them match, make them different; give one, two or three, the choice is yours.

What do you need

Bracelet blanks on Amazon.
  • Your local craft store (or online resource) will likely have wooden bracelet blanks. They come in different widths and with rounded or flat surfaces, depending on the desired look. Choose them alone or in sets.
  • fabric glue
  • Strips of fabric at least 1″ wide
  • Matching or contrasting threads, regular weight or topstitching
  • Topstitching needle, if using thicker threads
  • Spring clips
  • Bias maker (1/2″) (optional)

Preparation

  1. Cut the 1″ wide strips of fabric across the entire width of the fabric (42″-60″). Use different fabrics or all of the same, depending on how many bracelets you are making and the finished look you want.
  2. Bias maker
    Bias binding manufacturer Amazon.

Press under the long raw edges of the fabric strips to create ½” wide folded strips. Option: Use a bias binding machine to make the folded strips, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

  3. Sew the fabric strips using a slightly longer stitch than normal. Press the strips flat.

Assembly

  1. Place one short end of a strip of fabric inside the bracelet and glue it in place. Let dry.
  2. Wrap the strip firmly around the wooden bracelet and continue with successive turns, slightly overlapping the previous strip. The wooden bracelet should not be visible. Pull the strip firmly to avoid any gaps. Use spring clips to hold the wrappers in place and add random dots of glue to secure the wrapper.
  3. Continue wrapping to cover the entire surface of the bracelet. If you are short on strip length, cut so the end is inside the bracelet and glue the end of the strip in place. Start a new strip where the old one left off by first gluing the end and cutting it in place.
  4. Once the entire bracelet is covered, cut the end of the fabric strip so that it is on the bracelet on the inside; stick and clip in place.

Bracelet Tips

Bracelet made with fringed border

  • Use the decorative stitches on your sewing machine to embellish the fabric strips before folding them.
  • For a more casual look, cut narrower strips and fringe the edges.
  • Wrap it with a pre-made flat border for the fastest bracelet ever. Think metallic!

Covered hangers

Perfect for men or women, these fun hangers add a fun touch to everyone’s wardrobe.

Covered hangers

What do you need

  • Plastic hangersWire or plastic hangers (if you don’t have one, try them at Amazon)
  • Fabric 1/4 yard (for each)
  • Matching wire
  • Patterned tracing paper
  • Ribbon/trim (optional)
  • Iron-on canvas (optional)

Preparation

  1. Trace the outline of the hanger shape to the neck hook. Add 3/8″ for seam allowances on all edges.
  2. Cut two pieces of fabric in the shape of the pattern created in step 1.
  3. To embellish the hanger, sew the ribbons or trims in place on the single-ply fabric as desired.

Assembly

  1. Place the hanger cover pieces right sides together and sew the side corners together, leaving the neck hole open.
  2. Turn the lid right side out and press the edges. On the neckline and bottom edges, iron under the seam allowance on the wrong side.
  3. Carefully insert the hanging hook into the bottom edge of the cover. Pin the pressed bottom edges together and close with a hand stitch. When covering metal hangers, the bottom edges may be fused together instead of sewn, but do not merge the edges when using a plastic hanger as it may melt.
  4. To finish, tie a ribbon around the neck of the hanger and/or wrap the hook part in ribbon to completely cover it. Hand sew (or glue) the ends of the ribbon in place after wrapping.

Hangers can be covered with bandanas or scarves instead of fabric attached to the bolt.
