Learn how to make a lined drawstring bag that makes the perfect reusable drawstring gift bag! This is a great way to decorate for the holidays!

I like to make my holidays easier by making reusable objects that last a long time. One thing that takes up a lot of time every year is wrapping presents.

We still wrap some gifts in wrapping paper or gift bags, but I’m slowly switching to lined drawstring bags. They are so easy to use and easy to make! I love having a couple around for those last minute situations.

What fabric should I use for a lined drawstring bag?

Quilting cotton is the best fabric to use, but choose a color and print that makes you happy. Quilting cotton is easy to find and sew. You can even coordinate a specific fabric or color for each child or family member to make it easier to know who the gift belongs to.

I made mine with all red and green solids and prints, but you can choose any color or prints you want.

How to Sew a Lined Drawstring Bag

Supplies

  • Quilting cotton for outer fabric – quantity depends on the size of your bag
  • Quilted cotton for lining – same quantity – lining shows even when bag is closed
  • UNIQUE folded bias or wide ribbon
  • Twine, thin ribbon, wire or rope
  • Sewing tools
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

Cut two rectangles from the outer fabric and two matching rectangles from the lining fabric. I made a small 8 inch by 8 inch, a medium 8 inch by 12 inch, and a large 16 inch by 16 inch.

If you’re measuring to fit something, allow yourself extra inches on the top and side. Add 1 extra inch on top for casing.

fabric rectangles for lined drawstring bag

Start by pinning the top of the lining to the top of the outer fabric. (This is important for directional fabrics like tree fabric.) Pin them right sides together and sew with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

match top edges, pin and sew

Iron the seam allowance towards the lining.

Understitch the seam allowance towards the lining.

understitch the seam

Place one side of the bag on top of the other side, right sides together. Match the understitch seams. Mark a space for a hole in the liner.

right sides together, pin all edges

Sew around the rectangle, leaving a hole at the bottom of the lining. Backstitch when starting and stopping. Pivot at the corners.

sew around and leave a hole

Turn the rectangle right side out through the hole. Remove the corners of the exterior fabric only.

Pinch the hole closed and sew it.

Turn right. closed border seam hole

Push the lining down inside the outer fabric to form a bag. Push the corners of the lining into the outer corners of the fabric.

push the liner into the bag

Cut a piece of single-ply bias tape 1 inch longer than one side of the bag. Cut another piece.

Fold the short side over 1/2 inch on each side. Pin it to the top of the bag 1 inch from the top.

add a bias at the top

If using ribbon, use the same technique by folding the short end 1/2 inch and pinning it 1 inch from the top. Leave a space on each side.

add ribbon to the top

Sew a straight stitch on each side, leaving the center open. Make sure the sides do not overlap.

sew the case

Then cut two pieces of string or ribbon just longer than the circumference of the bag’s opening.

Use a safety pin to insert the string on one side and thread it all the way around. Take it out and tie a knot. Use a safety pin to insert the other string to the other side and thread it all the way around. Take it out and tie a knot.

add two drawstrings, one on each side

If you use a single cord, the case doesn’t stay closed either.

if a drawstring top won't stay closed

Make lots of bags of different sizes to wrap lots of gifts.
