I'll show you how to make these easy purse handles. They are quick and easy to make and use only ribbon and cotton cord. The following tutorial is to make a few 22″ (56 cm) handbag handles ready in just a few minutes.
I use these handles on my homemade reusable shopping bags. Both to replace groceries or as a simple tote to go to the market and transport products.
NOTE: You will notice that I do not use a cord despite the instructions. I decided to make some myself because I'm too lazy to go to the store and buy some. Normally, I have yards of it lying around in my fabric stash but since we moved, my stuff is in “transit” so to speak. I will share with you how I made this homemade cord next week.
How to Sew Easy Purse Handles Using Cord
Cut the cotton ribbon in half. Lay the ribbon flat on your table.
Cut the cord in half. I made mine long.
Add glue to the center of the ribbon.
Place the cord in the middle and fold the ribbon. Pin.
Sew the handles using the zipper foot. Start sewing one inch from the edge to 1/8″ from the edge. If you find this difficult you can use your speed stapler here, it is great for this type of work.
You may or may not finish the edge of the handles. This will depend on the finish of your handbag. Below are some of my shopping bags made from burlap or hessian, my favorite material because of its durability and natural material. The handles are all made using the technique above.
These handles couldn't be easier to make. What do you think? I still have a few bags using this type of handle but I don't want to spoil the surprise…make a pair, we'll use some tomorrow…Until then, happy sewing!
