How to make a Minky blanket

Learn how to make a minky blanket with two pieces of minky fabric. This is a great beginner sewing project, perfect for gift giving.

I decided I was basically a lizard. If the sun doesn't shine on me, it's because I'm cold. In the middle of cold winters, I need a heater or lots of blankets.

I usually wear socks, slippers, a base layer, a top layer, and a cardigan. Even with all those layers, if I'm sitting down to work or read to the kids, I need a blanket on me to keep me warm.

I've received some really nice blankets as gifts, but they're often throw size, meaning they're just barely too small. I decided to make my own DIY Minky Blanket that would be the perfect width and length.

Many minky blankets I see are made for babies with juvenile fabric. I wanted to make an adult blanket that looked more sophisticated, so I had to be very careful about the minky fabric I purchased. I chose a smooth navy blue for the back and an indigo dye print for the front.

For nine months out of the year, I throw a DIY blanket on my couch because it's used by me or the kids multiple times a day. Only during the hot summer months do we put it away and stop taking it out.

Besides being cold, I also use a minky blanket for comfort. I love the calming weight of a blanket at the end of the day to help me unwind.

What is Minky fabric?

Minky fabric is a polyester-based fabric. It is a stable knit so the grain does not stretch but the cross grain does stretch. It is blurry AND smooth on the right side and smooth on the back side.

As it is polyester, it cannot be ironed. It can be clipped and pinned and hides the stitching quite well. The fabric sheds a lot when cut and is difficult to sew on a woven fabric like satin or flannel.

How many yards of fabric do I need to make a blanket?

Most minky blankets you buy at the store are about 60 inches long and about 50 inches wide. Or you can say it's a meter and a half and the whole width of the fabric.

I'm tall and I like blankets to be as big as possible, so I made my blanket 58 inches wide and 71 inches long. I bought 2 yards of minky fabric in two different colors and used the full width of the fabric.

I made a two yard cheat quilt for my son, and it's the perfect throw length.

Wash and dry your fabric first.

With right sides together, clip the two sides together. Make sure it is selvage to selvage and cut edge to cut edge.

clip two sides

Once I clipped the two sides together I could tell if there were any size differences. The navy blue fabric was looser, so I trimmed a little.

cut the longest edge

The indigo fabric was longer, so I also cut that to fit.

cut the edge wider

Cut the two remaining sides. On the selvage side, I could go further between the clips since this side does not stretch. On the cut side, I moved the clips together.

Sew all around the blanket, going slowly so that the minky does not slip. Leave an 8 inch hole for turning and be sure to backstitch on each side of the hole.

sew and leave a hole

Cut all four corners to reduce clutter.

Turn the blanket right side out through the open hole. Luckily, since minky is slippery, it's easy to “slide” it through the hole.

clip corners

Close the hole with the seam allowance inside and the folded edges aligned. Sew the hole closed.

Instead of quilting or tying the minky blanket, sew around the blanket in a smaller rectangle. It's really hard to capture this stitch in a photo because the stitching blends so well with the minky fabric.

I sewed 7 inches from the edge and used a walking foot to keep the fabric from slipping. If you don't have a foot to walk on, first pin the place where you are going to sew, then sew.
