How to Install Heavy Duty Snaps

Learn how to install heavy-duty snaps, perfect for heavy fabrics like denim, canvas, leather, wool and corduroy. I installed my snaps in the Anna Button-Up Skirt sewing pattern from DIBY Club.

I like Anna buttoned skirt sewing pattern by Club DIBY, but I didn't want to sew so many buttons and buttonholes. Instead, I replaced all the buttons with heavy duty Dritz snaps for a different look. I loved how easy this skirt was to make and how easy it was to install the snaps!

I was paid to review this sewing pattern. All opinions are my own.

I took a size two in the hips and a size eight in the waist because that's where my measurements are. I added an inch and a half to the length. Once I sewed all the side seams together, the size was too big for me, so I just took hips to waist on the side seams and back seams.

I probably took a total of two to three inches off the back waist to adjust it. I probably could have made a size two everywhere except the front princess seams. The instructions for fitting, pattern modification, measuring and finishing were very thorough. I don't think I've ever seen a pattern with such detailed instructions.

I found this amazing almost olive green corduroy at a thrift store around the time I received the pattern. I was going to do a different fabric, but the green corduroy was calling to me especially since the 90s are back and trending. It was a meter and a half and it was the perfect amount.

I was very careful to cut it so that the nap ran the right way on all the pattern pieces. This fabric was so thick that I decided to use some scraps of cat quilting cotton I had (leftovers from a dress I made for my daughter) for the belt facing. I also changed the way the waistband was constructed because I had just started sewing like I usually do and then had to continue that way.

DIY corduroy skirt

I decided to do the midi length of the Anna buttoned skirt because it's my favorite length for skirts. It's an easy, carefree length. I love that this skirt has a pencil skirt shape, but it's not as restrictive as a real pencil skirt. I usually wear it with the bottom snap unfastened.

I'm definitely considering using these heavy duty snaps on a jean belt because they are so easy to install and they look so professional! Sometimes I don't want to play with buttons and buttonholes.

What's good about Anna buttoned skirt is that it is available in a wide range of sizes (sizes 00-36) and three views. There are mini skirt length, midi skirt length and maxi skirt length. It also comes with optional pockets and belt loops. Look through the Anna Buttoned Skirt Gallery to see all the skirt options on all shapes, sizes and ages!

The princess seams make the fit much easier and the lines are very flattering. The skirt is ideal for summer in lighter colored fabrics, and perfect for winter in wool and corduroy. I can't wait to make a wool version!

Separate all your pliers tools: round metal die base and metal taper punch, metal divider punch and black cap holder, and metal divider punch and purple post holder. The metal separator punch is used for installing the front and back snaps.

metal pressure base hand tool

Insert the base of the round metal die and the tapered metal punch into the pliers. Place the tip of the cone on the mark and tighten the pliers until you hear a loud noise. This is when the fabric is cut and “taken out”. Do this for all brands.

make a hole in the fabric

Remove the tools from the pliers using the gray tool remover.

Insert the metal splitting punch and black cap holder into the pliers.

Place a front cap on the black cap holder. Insert the front cap post into the hole in the fabric from the right side of the fabric.

place the snap on one side

Place the piping bowl side up on the front cap post.

place the cover over the snap

Squeeze the pliers firmly. The metal splitting punch will split and punch the post into six equal sections.

Insert the metal splitting punch and purple post holder into the clamp.

Place the post in the purple post holder.

place one side in the hand gripper

Slide the post through the hole in the fabric from the inside of the item. Place the stud flat side down on the post.

place the other side of the snap

Squeeze the pliers firmly. The metal splitting punch will split and punch the post into six equal sections.

Check if your photos work! I like to make all the front parts of the snaps and then use them to mark where the back parts of the snaps should go.
