sewing: a Garnet top with pleats (above) and another Garnet top with a Ruby insert. I also made a knit pajama set for Hugo using the Flashback Tee and Parsley shorts (again). He wears the outfit I made for him last year every day, so I made him another one.
listen: I listened to all the episodes The Witch Trials by JK Rowling this week, and it was… very interesting. I can't stop thinking about it. A central principle is the protection of free speech, and silencing opinions you disagree with poses a danger to democracy. Megan Phelps-Roeper interviews JK Rowling and the fact that she is hosting is itself an interesting element that the podcast dives into.
while reading: Circe by Madeline Miller. This book generated a lot of hype a few years ago when it came out and it's easy to see why: it's a quick and easy read, and it piqued my interest in Greek myths enough that I opened our copy of D'Aulaires. I give it 4 stars out of 5, with a penalty star only because it was a bit sad for a summer read. ^ Highly recommended for winter or fall!
Also: Good conversation by Mira Jacob was so good – I want my kids to read it next. I don't know how to describe the style, graphic novel mixed with collage, perhaps? The author is a mother trying to figure out how to talk to her child about race in America, and she turns to, among other things, 911 and the story of her parents' arranged marriage to tell her story.
sipping : lavender lemonade. I simmered a large handful of lavender in a saucepan with 1 cup water and 2/3 cup sugar, then let it steep for an hour before straining the liquid into a pot. We love adding it (about a shot) to a glass of lemonade – it's so delicious!
magnet: a new tubular mascara called blind. It's a little more expensive than the average drugstore mascara, but hallelujah, it's the first one I've tried that doesn't give me raccoon eyes by the end of the day. When you're ready to remove it, you gently apply a damp washcloth to your eyes and the tiny little tubes slide right off your lashes. So scary, so weird, so good. (Ann Arbor People: Rasa at Birch workshop on Packard sells it locally)

*I'm almost afraid to admit to you that I bought them NEW (gasp)…at the MALL (double gasp). In my defense, they were labeled “Mom Shorts” at a teenage clothing store in the mall where Clementine was shopping, so they were definitely meant for me, because I am definitely a mom. When I saw how torn they were, my heart went out to them. “I can fix you,” I whispered tenderly as I tried in vain to push the rewards program back to the register.
^So superficial!! I know. Let's all admit that you didn't come here for an in-depth literary vacation.
