Easy patterns to spruce up your fall wardrobe – The Fold Line

Are you trying to reset your sewing after a summer spent enjoying outdoor activities and trips away from home? As I write this, I too am trying to dust off my sewing machine and get back into the flow of sewing. The weather hasn't quite shifted into fall mode yet (maybe it's stuck and needs refreshing too!), so it can be hard to feel motivated to sew things for what will happen.

I've been trying to inspire my first fall sewing project, so I was looking for something to settle into that wasn't too difficult, but wasn't basic either. Something I can't wait to sew and wear and won't take forever to make. A nice accessible project to get me back into my sewing practice. So I've been scouring the store for easy designs to spruce up your craft wardrobe and have a little list of great options to share with you… Next, drink my first pumpkin spice latte of the year . Good team !

I’m going to start with a piece that I think we’ll all be sewing this fall/winter – a 1/2 zip sweater. Yes, it is more difficult to sew than a basic sweater, but it remains very accessible and is a key look this season. The French Navy Roscoe Sweater has a cool, boxy shape and features a half-zip on the front yoke that can be worn open or zipped up like a funnel neck. The other thing I really like about this pattern is the fact that the paneled facade has great potential for color blocking and/or reducing waste. Perfect for those odds and ends I always have to knock with.

Size: UK 6/8 – 34

Fall is all about layering and I find overalls and jumpsuits to be very useful items to have in rotation. The ready-to-sew Pincha overalls have an artistic vibe and a really interesting shape. They have a unique fit and style that was designed to hug your hips and waist. It features a bow tie on the front, balloon legs, five patch pockets and darts at the front and back for added shape. Wear with your favorite t-shirt or polo neck on cooler days. You can also try the Pablo overalls which have a similar vibe but with a wide silhouette.

Sizes: UK 6/8 – 14/16 and UK 18 – 32/34

Next up is something I've been meaning to sew for ages, but haven't gotten around to yet: the New Craft House Everyday Vest. It's a lovely layering piece that will transform any outfit and requires very little fabric. This is a great opportunity to use up small fabric scraps or something really special, like a jacquard. It looks great paired with a puff sleeve or as an accessory to a dress! If you're considering quilting clothing, this is a great project to start with.

Size: UK 6 – 34

Slip dresses have been a hot item for years because they can be worn throughout the seasons and styled in different ways. This is my fall version which is sort of a slip dress and apron. The Fiber Mood Kaya Dress is fully lined and features an easy-to-wear A-line silhouette, a V-neck front and back, and optional side seam pockets.

The best thing about this pattern is the fabric options…there are lots of them. You can decide what look you want and match your fabric to it. It can be woven or knitted, so the choice is wide: interlock (punta di roma for example), jacquard knit, neoprene, quilted, wool, corduroy, denim, the list goes on. I really like the full version. It would look great with chunky boots and a sweater over the top when the weather cools down.

Size: UK 6 – 28/30

There's one skirt silhouette I'm seeing all over the streets this fall and it's the slip. This clean, minimalist shape lends itself perfectly to patterns and prints as well as luxurious fabrics like satin. You can dress it up with a camisole or glitzy number for parties and dress it down with a sweatshirt and sneakers for everyday wear. And it's quite simple to sew. The Helen Skirt from Patterns Room is a great choice. This bias cut A-line midi skirt has a beautiful drape and fits perfectly on the hips.

Size: UK 6 – 24

I'm so happy this dupe of the viral Uniqlo bag exists. When something is so beautiful that everyone wants one, I want to sew it! The Fiber Mood Nousha bag is one that we will all enjoy sewing and wearing every day. This fanny pack is worn in the cool, crossover position which allows quick and easy access to your essentials. It’s also a fairly accessible sewing stitch. I think it would be fun to sew one out of something waterproof because there's nothing worse than a wet bag. It's also so small that you might be able to use scraps to make it or something a little more expensive, because 45cm for the main exterior and 45cm for the lining isn't much at all !

From what I've seen, seamstresses can't resist a blouse. I am one of those seamstresses. Tops are one of my favorite things to sew. If you want a fall floral print fabric, I have the pattern for you. The Atelier Jupe Zoey blouse is a timeless shape that is very easy to dress up or down and is even stylish enough for work. The loose blouse is easy to sew and features a V-neck and bust darts for shaping. The voluminous three-quarter sleeves, gathered at the cuffs, give this blouse an elegant look. It’s a perfect fall creation!

Size: UK 8/10 – 22/24

It is clear that the cargo ship has made a comeback. The thing about cargo pants is that they're actually a very practical piece for fall, especially for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities. The Puff and Pencil Versa pants are pretty cool. These easy-to-sew pants feature an adjustable elastic drawstring at the waist with the sporty look of the pattern and plenty of pockets. You can also sew an everyday version with a more classic look by removing the elastic cord and side leg pockets. The template instructions include a QR code for the video, ideal for visual learners.

Size: UK 6 – 22/24

I don't know why I've never made this pattern because the more I look at it, the more I like it. The idea of sewing a jacket can be a little intimidating, which is why I wanted to suggest one that is a fairly simple project for confident beginners and beyond. Helen's instructions are excellent, so you are in good hands. Helen's Closet Pona Jacket has an extra-large lining that allows this unlined jacket to open at the front – no zippers needed! It has an oversized blazer feel that's easy to throw on and wear indoors in place of a cardigan and the cropped version pairs perfectly with high-waisted clothing.

Size: UK 6 – 34

I'll leave you with one of my favorite things to sew and wear: the humble t-shirt. I will definitely have to add this model to my stash as it includes all the basics you could need. The Sew Liberated Bedrock Tee is available in two fits: semi-fitted and boxy with dropped shoulders. The former can be made as a vest, t-shirt and long-sleeved top, while the boxer cut can be made sleeveless, with short or long sleeves. That's a lot for your money! The instructions are full of tips for sewing with knits, so if you're ready to start creating your own t-shirts, the Bedrock Tee is a great place to start.
