Dream House: 3 yard quilt pattern

Sew the fun 3 yard Dream House quilt pattern with just 3 yards of fabric! I love seeing the quilts people make with my free 3 yard quilt patterns. They are easy to make and very popular. If you have three yard pieces of fabric in your stash and you're feeling creative, you can make a quilt. This easy quilt uses a “Dream House” collage quilt block to create a 49 1/2″ x 59″ quilt pattern with 9 1/2″ quilt blocks.

How big is a 10 yard quilt?

This particular quilt finishes at 49 1/2″ x 59″, which is a great throw sized quilt. You will have enough fabric to finish the quilt top, including 30 blocks and 2 borders. More fabric is needed for the binding and back of the quilt.

Most 10 yard quilts are quilts or quilts because they don't require a lot of fabric. Many of them would also make an adorable baby quilt with 3 yards of fabric. Since this type of quilt is not very large, you can finish it quickly and give it as a gift or use it in your home. Because of their size, quilts like this are easy to quilt on a home sewing machine.

Even though this quilt pattern has only one block, a collage block, sewing the same block with different fabrics reveals secondary patterns.

Can you see the stairs in Barbie's dream house? This appears to have a belt between the blocks. The sash is actually part of the blocks, so we will only need to include a sash (or partial border) on two sides after sewing the blocks together.

If you enjoy using your AccuQuilt fabric cutter like I do, I will share the optional cutting die numbers to make this model compatible with Accuquilt. Using an Accuquilt is optional, but I love it! How to choose the right 3 meters of fabric

All of my 3 yard quilt patterns make choosing your fabric so easy. First, find a beautiful “target fabric” in your stash or local quilt store. For this one, I chose a beautiful lavender colored fabric from my quilt shop. Sorry, I don't have the name!

After choosing your main fabric, choose one lighter coordinating fabric and one darker coordinating fabric.

My darkest print is from “Firefly” by Sarah Watts of Ruby Star Society.

Wouldn't this quilt pattern in earthy fall colors be too?

I used my EQ8 Quilt Design Software to see what this quilt would look like using the Hibernation Tilda's collection. Makes me want to cuddle up on the couch with someone!

If you follow these instructions for choosing your fabrics, you can't go wrong, and you probably already have 3 fabrics in your stash that will make a beautiful quilt.

Important note: This pattern extracts as much as possible from each meter of fabric. The width of each piece must have 42″ of usable fabric. Most fabrics printed within the last 5 to 10 years will work great because they are 44 inches wide including the selvedges, so they are 42 to 43 inches wide after cutting the selvedges .Please measure the width of your fabric pieces before starting to ensure And carefully follow the cutting charts below.

You will need:

  • 3 1 meter cuts of fabric (one main fabric, one darker fabric and one lighter fabric)*
  • a rotary cutting acrylic ruler and a mat
  • sewing machine
  • thread (I suggest thread to match the lighter fabric)
  • ironing board and iron

To sew the quilt top into a finished quilt, you will also need:

  • 3 yards of backing fabric (or enough to piece a 55″ x 64″ or larger quilt back)
  • a piece of fleece at least 55″ x 64″
  • 1/2 yard of fabric for binding

Cut:

How to Sew the Dream House Collage Quilt Block

1. Sew 1 1/2″ x 9″ rectangles of Fabric C to both sides of each 3″ x 9″ rectangle of Fabric A and Fabric B. You will make 20 pieces.

2. Sew a 1 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangle of Fabric C to one side of each 3″ x 5 1/2″ rectangle of Fabric A and Fabric B. You will make 20 pieces.

3. Sew a 5 1/2″ square of fabric A to the edge of fabric C of a piece of fabric B/C as shown above. Make 10 pieces.

4. Sew a 5 1/2″ square of Fabric B to the edge of Fabric C of a piece of Fabric A/C, as shown above. Make 10 pieces.

5. Sew one piece of C/B/C fabric to each piece of B/C/A fabric as shown above. Make 10 pieces.

6. Sew one piece of fabric C/A/C to each piece of fabric A/C/B as shown above. Make 10 pieces.

5. Sew a 1 1/2″ x 10″ rectangle of Fabric C to the top edge of each block as shown (both color variations). Make 20 blocks.

6. Press the block flat. Cut to a 10-inch square, if desired.

You should have 10 blocks in each color variation.

Assemble the Dream House 3 meter quilt top

1. Sew 4 quilt blocks in a row containing alternating blocks in each color variation as shown, starting with a darker block. Make 3 rows like this

2. Sew 4 quilt blocks in a row containing alternating blocks in each color variation as shown, starting with a lighter block. Make 2 rows like this.

3. Sew the five rows of quilt blocks together alternating as shown.

4. Use the 1 1/2″ x 42″ strips of the lightweight fabric (Fabric C) to make partial borders for the right side and bottom edge of the quilt top.

Assemble a 1 1/2″ x 48″ strip. Sew this strip to the right edge.

5. Cut and sew a 1 1/2″ x 39 1/2″ strip of fabric C to the bottom edge.

Measure and sew the inside border

1. Sew all 3-inch strips of the lightweight fabric (fabric C) together to form one long strip. You will cut pieces of it to make the interior border.

The expected length of the side edging pieces is 49”. I highly recommend measuring the quilt top and cutting all the border pieces to size. Learn how to cut quilt borders to size. Attach the side borders.

2. The expected length of the top and bottom border pieces is 44 1/2″. Measure your quilt and cut two strips for the top and bottom border. Attach the top and bottom border pieces.

Measure and sew the outer edge

1. Sew all of the 3-inch A fabric strips together to form one long strip. You will cut pieces of it to make the outer border.

The expected length of the side edging pieces is 54”. Measure the quilt top with the inside border and cut two strips for the side edges. Attach the side borders.

2. The expected length of the second top and bottom borders is 49 1/2″. Measure the top of your quilt with the inside border and cut two strips for the top and bottom edges. If you need additional fabric for the border outside, you can use the remaining 3″ x 11″ strip of fabric A.

Finishing the Three Yard Quilt Pattern from Dream House

1. Cut or piece together a piece of quilt backing fabric 55″ x 64″ or larger and form a quilt sandwich with the backing, batting and top.

2. Brush with iron-on fleece, pins or brush with spray.

3. Quilt as desired. Straight line quilting or crosshatch quilting with your walking foot would be quick and easy. Cut the extra backing fabric and batting.

4. Cut 5-6 binding strips and bind using your preferred method. This is my favorite quilt binding method.
