9 Can Storage Solutions Backed by Expert Know-How and Analysis

Are your sewing machine bobbins out of control? Check out these clever DIY ideas for storing your bobbins that will work on any sewing machine.

Tips from a sewing expert

I'm a can collector. I admit it. Over the years I have owned many sewing machines and collected bobbins of all sizes. As far as I know, I've also tried every can holder or organizer on the market.

As we consider each can storage solution, let's evaluate them based on these criteria:

  • Cost
  • Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding?
  • If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere?
  • Is it easy to use?
  • Appearance
  • Other important considerations

Plastic case with snap lid

Cost: $

Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding? No

If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere? No

Is it easy to use? Yes.

Appearance: dull

Other important considerations: It's very functional.

Acrylic case with snap lid

Cost: $

Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding? No.

If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere? Yes, acrylic plastic is fragile.

Is it easy to use? Yes.

Appearance: cute.

Other important considerations: This case came with a set of coils that I purchased online. I like it for storing empty bobbins because there is no thread that will unravel.

Silicone coils or coils

Cost: $

Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding? Yes

If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere? No

Is it easy to use? Yes.

Appearance: Cute

Other important considerations: This is not a case or an organizer; the reels still need tidying up.

Silicone ring type bobbin holder

Cost: $$

Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding? No.

If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere? Most likely.

Is it easy to use? Yes.

Appearance: cute.

Other important considerations: None. I like to use a ring bobbin holder for temporary storage next to my machine.

Plastic bobbin pins that hold the bobbin and bobbin together

Cost: $

Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding? No.

If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere? No.

Is it easy to use? Less than most. The spool pin requires precision and pressure to push it through the bobbin.

Appearance: cute.

Other important considerations: This is not a case or organizer; the reels still need tidying up. I don't like storing my bobbins and thread together. Spools of thread require much more storage space than bobbins, so my bobbins are kept next to my sewing machine, while the thread is a few feet away on a thread rack.

Acrylic storage bin supplied with popular yarn pack

Cost: $$$ (unless you have already purchased the thread bundle).

Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding? No.

If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere? Yes, acrylic plastic is fragile.

Is it easy to use? Less then. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to remove the top coils to reach one below.

Appearance: cute.

Other important considerations: When choosing a can, it's easy to see almost all of them.

Plastic housing with foam insert

Cost: $$

Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding? Yes.

If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere? No.

Is it easy to use? Yes.

Appearance: Pretty with colorful coils inside.

Other Important Considerations: This is my favorite bobbin storage case of all. You can buy one for each bobbin size. I keep several stacked in a drawer near each sewing machine to hold my different bobbin colors.

Cost: $$$

Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding? Yes.

If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere? Yes, and it will break into several pieces that will need to be reassembled. This happened so often that I threw mine away in anger. Therefore, I couldn't take my own photo.

Is it easy to use? No.

Appearance: Pretty if you like green and yellow.

Other important considerations: He is also very wobbly, which causes him to fall to the ground more often. I would never purchase this can storage solution again and I do not recommend it.

3D printed bobbin tray

Cost: Free, if someone you know has a 3D printing hobby.

Does this prevent the bobbin thread from unwinding? No.

If you drop it, will the reels fly everywhere? Yes.

Is it easy to use? Yes.

Appearance: cute. This will be the color of the 3D printing filament.

Other important considerations: There is no cover or way to keep the thread from unraveling, but this tray looks wonderful next to my long arm quilting machine. I can load it with extra spools of the color I need, and it's easy to collect them.

I also love it because my son printed it for me as a gift. There are free 3D print files for this bobbin tray and others online.
